Distribution of public performance rights

Domestic

The amounts distributed by UBC for public performance of musical works on a domestic scale reached a total of R$ 325.4 million in 2015. The total distribution by ECAD to authors’ rights holders was R$ 709.3 million, which means that distribution by UBC for this category of rights represents 45.88% of the total amount distributed by ECAD.

This total includes amounts collected from Pay TV operators referred to channels retransmitted from abroad and transferred for distribution abroad to the society in the country from which the transmission originated.

The following analysis and graphs take into consideration the amounts actually distributed, excluding “cable retransmission” (retransmitted channels) which will be distributed abroad.

Accordingly, distribution reached the R$ 279.1 mark, representing a decrease of 19.3% compared to 2014.

The items notably responsible for the drop were Free to air TV, plummeting 44% over 2014 figures, due to the settlements distributed that year; and Pay TV which exhibited a 13% decrease. Taken together, these two sources of revenue represent 48% of the total distributed. Other areas taking significant hits were radio, representing 19% of the total distributed, which dropped 17%; and internet, representing only 0.4% of the total, falling 11%.

Authors’ rights represent 88% of the distribution of public performance rights domestically, compared to 12% for neighboring rights.

International

The amounts received from abroad and distributed in 2015 totalled R$ 3.27 million. 98% (R$ 3.2 million) were distributed to members for authors’ rights and 2% (R$ 68 thousand) for neighboring rights.

The distribution of authors’ rights carried out by UBC during 2015 reached R$ 329.2 million, benefitting 98,652 domestic and foreign rights holders. In comparison with 2014 figures, this result represents a contraction of 14.3%.

Of the amounts distributed, 98.85% (R$ 325.4 million) came from domestic performance of works and recordings in 2015; 0.99% (R$ 3.3 million) were performances abroad; and 0.16% (R$ 512.8 thousand) from mechanical and digital royalties.
